Rabbit facts

Here are a few interesting facts about pet rabbits

  • A male rabbit is called a buck, a female is a doe and a baby is a kitten.
  • A rabbit house is called a hutch and must be a safe haven for your bunny- protecting him or her from the rain, wind and sun and also from predators such as dogs and foxes. A good hutch will have a wire base (to prevent digging) and a removable roof for easy cleaning. You need a sheltered sleeping area with comfy bedding such as straw or wood shavings. Cover your hutch in mosquito netting as mosquitos can carry a disease that is deadly to rabbits called myxomatosis.
  • Its best to feed your bunny commercially prepared rabbit pellets which provide a balanced diet and supplement this with fresh fruit and vegies like carrots, cauliflower and apples.
  • Rabbit’s teeth are always growing so you should provide a piece of hard wood for them to chew on. If the teeth grow too long, they can be filed or trimmed down (get your vet to show you how)
  • Pet rabbits often live for 10 years ( and some up to 15 years!)
  • Rabbits are naturally clean animals and tend to do their dropping in one area. It is fairly easy to toilet train them to use a certain area or even a litter tray
  • Bunnies can be trained to wear a small dog harness so that you can take them for a stroll but feel secure that you wont lose them. It is much easier to train a younger animal than a mature one.
  • Rabbit’s ears are very sensitive and you should never pick them up by the ears or pull on them.

DID YOU KNOW?

That despite popular belief, rabbits are not RODENTS. Rabbits have two pairs of upper incisors (front teeth)- a large pair in front and a small pair behind, while rodents have only one pair of upper incisors.
