How do I teach my dog to come when I call her?

It is best to start this in a home environment where she is likely to want to come and where the space is also confined. Start training when she is hungry. With treat in hand, call her to you using the simple command ‘Come Goldie’ and as soon as she does, reward her with the treat as well as verbal praise. Practice all around the house and backyard, praising and rewarding each time your dog returns to you.

After several training sessions, you can head to an open environment and use the same technique, but this time keep your dog on a long leash until you are confident she would be happier running to you than playing with a doggy friend.

Never call the dog to punish her or just to take her home - why would she want to come back if she faces what to her is an unpleasant experience? The key is to make the recall a pleasant event, so she always wants to return to you!
